Use of Countrywide Lawsuit Settlement Funds in Michigan

March 22, 2009
Heart of West Michigan United Way will address essential needs through the countrywide settlement funds
Attorney General Mike Cox announced that $500,000 will be granted to Heart of West Michigan Untied Way to address housing, foreclosure prevention and other essential needs.
“We are appreciative of the resources coming into West Michigan and we will invest in basic things that are essential for quality of life in our community,” said Robert Haight, president Heart of West Michigan United Way.  United Way will allocate the majority of the funds to the Essential Needs Task Force Fund created with the support of foundations in West Michigan.  The Kent County Essential Needs Task Force was formed in 1982 with hundred of non-profits, governmental agencies, faith –based organization, funders and concerned volunteers helping Kent County’s most vulnerable citizen obtain the basic needs and self-sufficiency.  Current economic conditions have expanded the work of ENTF to include citizens who have been impacted by the recession. The ENTF has been funded by Kent County, State of Michigan and Heart of West Michigan Untied Way in order to address essential needs.  Haight said, “Our community is positioned to utilize the Countrywide settlement dollars effectively with transparency and accountability.”
ENTF, United Way and local foundations established an essential needs fund, application process and review committee in conjunction with the Grand Rapids Community Foundation.  It is United Way’s intent to allocate most of the settlement dollars to this Essential Needs Task Force Fund.  Haight said, “United Way will be working with the Attorney General to align the community response to the terms of the settlement.”  A community meeting will be held 7:00 PM, Monday; at the Wealthy Street Theater with representatives who will be prepared to discuss how these funds will be granted.
